Notes v. Exchange - 'Who's the Dodo?' - Part 1

I am fascinated by this perpetual argument, whether it be IBM v Microsoft or Notes v Exchange, it is one that seems to be as old as the pyramids. Every business function seems to have a different perception as to what/who is best and sit in often opposing camps.

My starting point is a survey on www.networkworld.com, titled Lotus Notes vs. Microsoft Exchange: which side are you on? The result was firmly in favour of Exchange but without knowledge as to their source, the value placed on these statistics is a personal one.

Results:
Lotus Notes 38% (779 votes)
Microsoft Exchange 61% (1252 votes)
Survey removed October 2008

So what can we learn from this? Very little I hasten to add. However, it is obvious that some users prefer one to the other…well that’s life! Where choice is made available there will always be variations in personal preferences.

So why does the debate/argument/discussion continue to fester and be prominent throughout the industry?

I suppose that where differences of opinion are potentially personal, then never the twain shall meet! It is simpler to find the negative than the positive and never easy to be impartial in our judgments.

If there is factual evidence to hand then why is this debate still raging?

1 - Microsoft is for home, pushed to business and Lotus Notes is built for business from the ground (security) up. People became "comfortable" with MS Exchange and forgives all it's warts, while none of Lotus Notes warts are forgiven. Feature by feature Lotus Notes is the clear winner, just not available at home, so the comfort is not the same. It's a psychological thing that IBM has never learned.

2 - Some of the warts of Exchange are in comparison to Notes and vice versa.
And it's not Exchange which gets any credit usually, it's Outlook.
The funny thing is, on a phone/PDA you really aren't using either and given the way the world is evolving, perhaps neither will win in the end because it will become solely a server issue.

I couldn't find the article, but I am very suspect of a survey that didn't even bother to compare a client piece of software with a client piece of software. Notes is the client Domino is the server AND Outlook is the client and Exchange is the server.

Let's not forget comparing an application platform to a mail platform.

Therefore if it was a slightly realistic comparison it would have been:
Notes vs Outlook
or
Domino vs Exchange

4 - I am always suspicious of market share surveys via Web sites where the audience is already heavily biased in some way based on content or purpose of the Web site. Those surveys may be interesting, but rarely accurate or conclusive.

I've read about a German Web site survey with 980 responses where the Domino market share came out to be 83%. { Link }

As much as I'd like to, I don't really believe that result either.
